Places to visit in Savoy

Chambéry, the city of dukes

Chambéry, the city of dukes

Chambéry, known as the 'City of Dukes', is situated 23km far from the campsite . The old city of Chambéry is characterised by a maze of alleys and courtyards of private mansions. Their architecture, of Piedmontese influence, is often embellished with decorations (trompe-l'oeil, ironwork, sculpture, etc.).
Situated in the northern Pre-Alps between Bauges and Chartreuse massifs, at the confluence of Leysse and Albanne rivers and then Hyères, the town is the current prefecture of Savoie department, as well as the seat of a Court of Appeal and an archbishopric. With a population of 59,490 inhabitants in 2014, Chambéry ranks 91st in France.
Nestled at the foot of the castle, the historic centre of Chambéry offers a dense and original urban fabric strongly marked by the presence of water. This ensemble, whose buildings are particularly homogeneous, is protected within the framework of a safeguarded sector.

Aix les bains, the Alpine Riviera

Aix les bains, the Alpine Riviera

29 kilometres away from the campsite, Aix-les-Bains, nicknamed the Riviera of the Alps, has been shaped by thermalism, its Roman remains, its palaces and Belle-Epoque villas, its Art Deco thermal baths and its romantic gardens are witnesses of the past. Considered as one of the oldest towns in Savoie, born from its hot springs, this water town is one of the significant French thermal towns. It was also a major resort during Belle Époque time for princely and wealthy families. Today, this listed tourist resort is diversifying its activities on the scale of its 75,000 inhabitants.
You can discover Faure Museum, a little-known museum housing an important collection of paintings and sculptures bequeathed to the town by Doctor Jean Faure, an enlightened art lover of the first half of the 20th century. Also the Casino Grand Cercle, a Belle Epoque style building listed as a historical monument.

La Chartreuse Natural Park

La Chartreuse Regional Nature Park was created on 6th May 1995 with the aim of promoting the rich cultural, industrial and religious heritage of the area, as well as its exceptional natural areas. Discover and enjoy La Chartreuse lakes or further lakes in the surroundings, to refresh yourself and enjoy water activities! Among these lakes, Lac du Bourget is the largest natural lake in France and gorgeous in all seasons. It is a remarkable natural space where the mountains fall steeply into turquoise waters. A lake that makes you want to take your time, to fully enjoy the scenery. Lake Paladru is the 5th largest lake in France and is remarkable for its 7 protected natural areas, including les Grands Roseaux located to the north of the lake, a favourite place for bird nesting. Numerous archaeological excavation campaigns have made it famous. La Chartreuse has inherited a rich and varied heritage with majestic forts and castles, astonishing churches and a world-famous monastery. The museums and historical sites of La Chartreuse reveal their stories and secrets, including: the historical site of St Christophe caves, la Grande Chartreuse museum, Sanas trail, cellars of la Chartreuse, the bridge and Grand Logis gate...
Take the know-how route and meet local producers and craftsmen who will be pleased to pass on their passion for their trades.

Natural park of the Bauges massif

The Bauges are a medium-sized mountain massif whose highest peaks (Arcalod, Trélod, Pecloz) are gathered in the east, leaving a gentler relief to the west (Semnoz, Mont Revard, Mont du Nivolet).
This massif has a great biological diversity on its 90 000 hectares.
Created on 7th December 1995, the Bauges Natural Park includes 67 communes, 46 of which are located in Savoie and 21 in Haute-Savoie. The Bauges Massif stretches between Annecy to the north, Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry to the west and Albertville to the east, limited to the south by Isère valley. In 2011, it became the third park in France to obtain the Geopark label.

During your stay, you will have the opportunity to discover the Bauges through sports, walks, hikes... but also idleness, al thisl at your own pace. Visit its extraordinary sites: Pont du Diable, Pont de l'Abîme... and its entertainment and events as well as its typical villages. You can choose either to contemplate the sumptuous panoramas from the belvederes accessible by car: the Revard or the Semnoz...
or magnificent landscapes offered to you without any constraint! You can enjoy the gentle way of life in all simplicity. Strolling around is also an opportunity to meet many craftsmen: potters, leather craftsmen, sculptors, ceramists... And above all, meet Jean-Paul in the hamlet of La Magne in Saint-François-de-Sales for typical crafts: the Argenterie des Bauges, turned wooden tableware which owes its name to the sycamore maple, a bright white wood used in its manufacture.
The Bauges massif is also the place to be for gourmets, among the culinary specialities chevrotin and tome des Bauges AOP, but other cheeses should also be discovered and tasted such as Valbleu, Montpela, Margériaz, Saint-Bruno or Béret... Wines, liqueurs and herbal teas should also be discovered with the local producers,
For your hiking walks, you will easily find the right itinerary adapted to you and your family: whatever you are looking for, rather easywalks, or sporty itineraries dedicated to mountain runners, or day hikes taking you to the top of the most emblematic peaks of the Bauges or la Chartreuse.
